Graham Hill is proud to have a long standing partnership with Pacific Northwest Ballet. PNB offers two outstanding programs, DanceChance and Discover Dance.

In 1999 we began partnering with DanceChance, a program that identifies and trains students starting in third grade. Every fall a PNB screening team visits Graham Hill and identifies third grade students who possess the unique physical aptitude required to pursue a career in dance. Selected third graders participate in a 10-week introductory session which is built into their school day. These students are provided with classical ballet training twice a week, dancewear and shoes, transportation to PNB classes from school, and tickets to PNB performances. A select number of students demonstrating talent and interest are invited to join the Spring Session and may advance to the DanceChance Level 2 classes for 4th graders the following year. In the third year of studies, DanceChance students are integrated into regular PNB classes which meet after school. Students have the opportunity to dance in PNB’s Annual School performance in June, and in some cases perform with the company in PNB productions including Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, and Coppelia.

The Discover Dance performance partnership is a dance residency that has been at Graham Hill since 2001. The third grade and Montessori 2/3 classrooms spend 10 weeks with a PNB dance instructor building skills, learning dance vocabulary, and creating choreography that culminates with a performance at McCaw Hall. As a part of the residency, Ms. Adams and the PNB dance instructor/choreographer select a theme and music that the Graham Hill Fifth Grade Chorus then performs to accompany the dances. Fourth and fifth grade students also work with a visual artist in residence to create a scenic design for the McCaw Hall stage. As part of the residency, students take a field trip to the PNB studios to observe the PNB company dancers, have their own lesson in a PNB dance studio, and tour the costume shop. All Discover Dance participants are also invited to a free performance of ‘Eyes on Dance’ featuring excerpts from the current PNB production with a live orchestra.
